Out Of The Blue: Debbie Gibson is Back in 2019

Here’s one of the best things about pop culture in America: if you wait long enough, the things that you used to love will be back in style, and that couldn’t be more true than for 80’s nostalgia. To further prove this saying, Debbie Gibson is back!  Nothing or no one really personifies the spectacular musical achievements of that decade like Debbie Gibson. In fact, just like 80’s nostalgia, Debbie Gibson is back in force for 2019 with a screaming hot new tour called the Mixtape Tour. I am pinching myself right now because I can’t believe I recently met her! Talk about an 80’s dream come true. If you are as excited as I am to hear about her new tour, take a listen to her new single Girls Night Out here.

Pop Quiz: The New Kids on The Block, Debbie Gibson, Salt-n-Pepa, and Naughty by Nature are all on tour and tearing up the pop charts, what year is it?

A. 1987
B. 1988
C. 2019
D. All of the above.

If you guessed D, then you’re correct! The 80’s are back with a vengeance and we’re happy to be along for the ride. For those of you not “in the know” about our dear Debbie Gibson, she is teen pop star icon who rose to meteoric popularity in 1987 with the release of her first album, Out Of The Blue. You may recognize some of her hit singles Only In My Dreams, Shake Your Love, and Foolish Beat. Interestingly enough, Foolish Beat hit number one on the Billboard’s charts which made her at the time the youngest person to ever sing, write, and produce a number one song. As of this writing, that record still holds!

After the 1980’s though, much like leg warmers and shoulder pads, Debbie Gibson’s public popularity began to fade. She continued to release albums throughout the 90’s and 2000’s, but never topped the charts like she did in the 80’s. She did, however, continue to perform regularly in stage musicals and plays both on and off Broadway and has even dedicated a lot of her time to mentoring and advising other young women on how to navigate the treacherous waters in the music industry and pop stardom.

Debbie is a true anomaly in the world of towering pop celebrities. She got rich and famous at a very early age but never let it go to her head. From all accounts, she was very humble and generous and even continued attending and even graduated from her public high school after topping the Billboard charts with several hit singles. Through her passion for music, theater, and dancing, she has lead a fulfilling and creative life that has continued to bring joy and inspiration to her fans and her community. We’re all grateful to have her as something rare indeed: a fantastic pop icon who has continued to be a powerful role model for the youth of the 80’s and every generation since.
