The Top Three Rom-Com Movies of the 80’s

Who doesn’t love a good rom-com? You know, the ones you can watch over and over because they never get old? The 80’s gave us some of the best rom-coms ever made!  While is was super tough narrowing down my list, here are my top three favorites.

Can’t Buy Me Love

In the movie Ronald Miller, a nerdy high schooler, rescues cheerleader Cindy Mancini from her parents after she’s been reprimanded for ruining her mother’s designer dress at a party. Ronald agrees to pay $1,000 for the outfit on one condition: that Cindy will act like they are together for an entire month. Classic rom-com premise!

Spoiler alert: Cindy ends up starting to like Ronald, duh! Ronald must then straighten out his priorities of friendship, love, and popularity. This is a classic 80’s rom-com because you are totally into whether it will all work out in the end and they will live happily ever after but we also can’t take our eyes off all the wild 80’s style! Watch the trailer and take a glimpse into what high school was like in the 80’s.

Sixteen Candles

This movie is all about a girl coming of age in the same awkward way we all experienced. She is celebrating her sixteenth birthday and her family totally forgot!  The movie has all the classic rom-com scenes like the secret crush, the big dance, the make out, and the unforgettable kiss over the sixteen candles. Molly Ringwald would go on to star in more of our favorite 80’s movies like The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink. We know why it appealed to us as kids but it is just as enjoyable for us adults! Check out the trailer and you’ll see just why it’s an 80’s classic.

Girl’s Just Want to Have Fun

The ultimate slumber party movie! I mean who doesn’t love a movie where girls just want to have fun, dance, rebel, and find a little romance too. Check out the trailer and see for yourself why this was a favorite of many. If you haven’t seen it, by the time you finish the trailer you will definitely want to!

This movie expertly showcases the fun music and 80’s fashion trends that will make you want to rewind time.  Janey was the main character played by Sarah Jessica Parker and Lynne was played by Helen Hunt. These two characters taught us what girl power was all about. Even though Sarah Jessica Parker had the title role with Lee Montgomery as her dance partner and boyfriend, Helen Hunt was the real superstar of this film. Lynne helped Janey with her dream of being on Dance TV.  It is such a fun-loving, feel-good movie that will have you up off your couch and dancing.

Bonus: If you loved Girl’s Just Want to Have Fun then you probably also had your cassette tape of Cyndi Lauper’s tune of the same name on repeat. We used to have to wait on bated breath for MTV to play her hit music video but now we can watch it anytime we want on YouTube! If you haven’t seen it for a while here it is. Girls DO just want to have fun!

So next time you are ready to binge watch some good old 80’s movies remember these top three selections. Now all you have to do is put on your comfy pants, break out the popcorn and chocolate, grab your favorite blanket, curl up on the sofa, and click play.
